Lake Geneva Raceway Empty Lake Geneva Raceway

Post  Dave Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:06 am

Just started on a new layout. I got home with the track Sunday night and just threw a course together. It sits on a 4 X 7 a/c plywood. (Had to cut a foot off to get it up the stairway. I'm gonna need more track to fill it in better, probably go 4 lane. But, this will do for now. Here's a few pics of what I have now. My "Man Cave" is actually above the garage.

I managed to cram a few more pieces of track in there. It's also much more even now.

Lake Geneva Raceway Empty 4Gear takes on bridge support

Got my favorite 4Gear warmed up and was doing 12 or so laps. I was building speed on each lap when I lost it dog-legging it into the cork screws. I think I got killed.

LOL, yeah that looks like it could be terminal. So have you decided on a firm layout yet?

I tried a few different layouts today. I think I'm gonna go with this one. It's got some straights, some technical areas and no frills (like cork screws and squeeze tracks). The turns at the bottom have 90 deg @ 12 and 90 deg @ 9. This tightens it going into the tech area and widens coming out. I think this will be my best use of space. If I hadn't had to cut a foot off the end of the board, my straights would be a foot longer but, what can ya do?

Now that one I like. Now if I can just get you going the other way my stagger would work better. But you just want to have an edge next time I'm down, Ha Ha
Looks good Dave and I think you will like the overall speed more.

With pancakes your terminal velocity is realized a lot sooner than with magnets, you have plenty of room to reach top end and that should be all you're really looking for. If you wanted to get tricky you could get the chicane but then you're slowing your cars down again. Looks good, nothing wrong with a nice technical 2 lane.

Well, I got the sod laid. My fingernails are dirty! No, it went pretty easy except for the glue mess. Found a 5x7 carpet so I have a foot to play with in the front for an apron. The sides and back will have walls. Then, I'm hoping to inlay a pond in the centerfield shaped like Lake Geneva!

Just a couple small updates. I stapled the apron in front temporarily. Then I added an "S" to the mid-field. My mom was getting rid of these little houses so, I threw them in for the time being. They are a tad small but, for now, it's better than nothing!

This morning I built a set of legs for my top. It worked out pretty good. I moved the whole works into an alcove and it fit dang near perfectly! Now, I feel like I have something.

Here is the latest configuration of LGR. I took out the banked curves. My T-jets were having a little trouble with them.

Gotta love it, old school with the mechanical lap counter and everything. The only problem I had when I ran a mech counter was it was at the end of a very long straight and would shear off guide pins every once in a while. After I moved it to a slower part of the track it worked great.
